Abstract

It is not only the linguistic constituents of language but also the literary texts of various genres of literature that are helpful in teaching language. The variety in language is assured by use of literary texts based on authentic standards. Literary text motivates the learner to make the language learning procedure better and enrich his language. Language learning through literature is of significance because the learners get command over language skills. Various activities can be used for communication during teaching in classroom. These may be either role plays, presentations and individual or, pair group activities. The scope of use of literature in learning language is multi-dimensional. Though all genres of literature are helpful for language learning, yet, short stories are considered to be most interesting, charming and appealing. Literary pieces especially stories are more attractive and fascinating than other teaching materials and allow group discussions and individual explorations. They offer real language use, which creates a feeling for the language in the students. It was found in the present study that all the investigations made advocate the idea that use of literature in learning provided chances to get familiarity with language, its structure and meanings.
